“Saturday Traditional Folk Play” is a regular performance of important intangible cultural assets designated by the Korean government and Busan local government. The purpose of the performance is to introduce traditional folk plays designated as Busan’s intangible cultural assets to domestic and foreign tourists and promote the artistic superiority of Korean culture. The audience can understand tradition and culture specific to Busan by experiencing various folk plays handed down from generation to generation. In addition, the performance expands the opportunity for not only Busan citizens but also visitors to enjoy traditional cultures, paving the path for culture education to reduce cultural gap between generations. By integrating performances with tourist attractions, Busan will make a step forward as a famous region loved by domestic and international tourists.

Introduction

“Saturday Traditional Folk Play” is a regular performance of important intangible cultural assets designated by the Korean government and Busan local government. The purpose of the performance is to introduce traditional folk plays designated as Busan’s intangible cultural assets to domestic and foreign tourists and promote the artistic superiority of Korean culture. The audience can understand tradition and culture specific to Busan by experiencing various folk plays handed down from generation to generation. In addition, the performance expands the opportunity for not only Busan citizens but also visitors to enjoy traditional cultures, paving the path for culture education to reduce cultural gap between generations. By integrating performances with tourist attractions, Busan will make a step forward as a famous region loved by domestic and international tourists.

Programs

“Saturday Traditional Folk Play” is performed on every Saturday from April to November, except July and August. Tourists can have a vivid experience of Busan’s history, tradition, and culture. Folk plays with a long history, such as mask dramas, dances, and songs, are performed showing the superiority and value of Busan’s intangible cultural assets. Various performances from folk plays preserved in its original form to performances reconstructed in modern style deliver educational and fun messages to the audience. After the performance, audience can enjoy folk plays through experience activities.

Synopsis

Many performances and folk plays are held all year round to introduce Busan’s traditional culture with a long history: Suyeong Yaryu and Dongnae Yaryu are traditional performances for wishing prosperity and blessing of the entire village; Nongcheong Nori in Suyeong and Eobang Nori in Jwasuyeong took place during farming and fishing, respectively; and Kang Taehong’s Gayageum Sanjo is a traditional music with attractive sanjo melodies. Busan provides visitors with various spectacles and entertainments by holding festivals composed of folk plays and traditional performances. In particular, participation of cultural asset preservation groups which have inherited Busan’s intangible cultural assets raise cultural values of each performance. “Saturday Traditional Folk Play” introduces the life of ordinary Busan people in the past, such as those engaged in the city's agriculture, fishing, religion, arts, and culture.
