Opened in 1985 as the first public wholesale market in Korea, Garak Market offers separate sections for fruits, vegetables, garlic, fish, dried foods and meat in a 543,451 square meters area.
Run by the Seoul Agricultural & Marine Products Corporation, the market is where agricultural and fishery products from around the nation are distributed and set for standard pricing. Throughout the night, the market receives lines of freight trucks filled with fresh food.
If you want to see the auction, one of the more exciting aspects of the market, it’s best to visit between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. If you go much later in the evening you may get lost among the trucks and merchants that start pouring in.
Because the market is so big, it may be too time-consuming and tiring to look around without first getting a map and deciding on which sections you want to visit.

Garak’s agricultural market occupies 90% of its total transactions. The direct sales between seller and consumer take place every day,
in which the prices can be changed depending on the conditions. The number of stalls selling fruits and vegetables total about 1,370.
[Fishery Market]
Garak Market’s morning is always lively with sea foods and products freshly caught and delivered right from the sea. They come from East, West and South coasts of Korea and put in to auction from 2 a.m., until 5 a.m. The prices are
normally 10~20% cheaper than market price.
[Livestock Market]
Livestock Market is located in building 2, that is almost 1/3 in size compared to Fishery Market. The building is equipped with a butcher shop, convenience store and many sales stalls selling various meats and parts of animal stocks. The auction runs twice a day at 10:30 and 14:30. The stores are open from 4 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
