Tancheon Stream (탄천)

Garosugil Homestay (가로수길 홈스테이) [한국관광품질인증/Korea Quality]

Garosugil Homestay, located in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, is a domestic-style guest house. The owner, who worked as a Japanese interpreter for 37 years, established the guest house after his/her daughter’s marriage, offering guests the highest level of comfort and an excellent standard of communication in Japanese. It has a communal kitchen equipped with various cooking utensils including a variety of plates and bowls that are suitable for different dishes. All the bedding is cotton. As used bedding will be washed and ironed perfectly, the guest house only accepts guests for a minimum of two nights. Garosu-gil Road, which is a hotspot among young people in Seoul, is only three minutes’ walk away from the guest house. In addition, it offers easy access to public transportation as it is only five minutes from the nearest bus stop and seven minutes from the nearest subway station by foot. Room B, which is slightly larger than Room A, has an extended terrace.

Charm Hanok Guesthouse (참한옥게스트하우스)[한국관광품질인증/Korea Quality]

Located in Unni-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Charm Hanok Guesthouse is traditional Korean house-style accommodations built over 100 years ago. While it keeps the original features of the house such as ondol (room with Korean floor heating system), yard, garden, and gate, the toilets and kitchen equipment were renovated for the convenience of guests. The guesthouse has a total of four rooms –family room with double-deck bed, triple room, and two double rooms. The subtle lighting from the hanji (Korean paper) lamp renders a calm atmosphere to the room. It has a communal bathroom divided into men’s and women’s and a communal kitchen that allows guests to cook and eat simple food. It offers easy access to surrounding tourist attractions and shopping area in Jongno and Jung-gu. In addition, guests can easily use public transportation since it is close to the Jongno 3-ga station and bus stop. All the staff can speak English to provide information about accommodations and tourism.

Seungdong Church (승동교회)

Seungdong Presbyterian Church was designated Tangible Cultural Asset No. 130 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on April 6, 2001. Originally known as “Gondanggol Church,” the church was established by Samuel Foreman Moore (1860-1906) in 1893. In those days, the church was known as a “baekjeong church” since it primarily drew Korea’s social underdogs such baekjeong (the butchers), the untouchable class of Joseon society. Following a number of relocations and name changes (called “Gondanggol,” “Jungang,” and finally “Seungdong”) the church was moved to its current location in Insadong. After Moore died in 1906, Charles Allen Clark became the pastor of the church and Mongyang Yuh Woon-hyung, a key figure in the political history of Joseon, became active in the church. The church was attended by many other activists as well. In fact, the large student demonstration that took place during the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919 was organized by a group of young church members. The church once again made its mark on history with the establishment of the Joseon Theological Seminary in 1939. Seungdong Church (B1-2F) covers a total of 660 square meters. No record has been found on its architect or builder, but the building is said to have been one of the more magnificent buildings in the area before its beauty was obscured by newer structures.

Baeksasil Valley (백사실계곡)

Baeksasil Valley in Seoul is a historic site (Baekseokdongcheon, Famous Site No. 36) that rests amid untouched natural surroundings. The valley is a habitat to a diverse amount of animals, including salamanders, frogs, minnows, and crayfish. There are also wild boar sitings from time to time so be careful. The preservation value of this area is especially high as the valley is home to a large colony of salamanders, which are indicator species of the clean water and a protected wildlife species of Seoul. Baeksasil Valley is a tucked away treasure in the bustling city. The path along the area’s thick forest and natural valleys provides an excellent getaway. Since the area is a habitat to several protected species, visitors are asked to refrain from dipping their feet in the valley’s waters while exploring the scenery. The entrance to the valley is located past the Sanmotungi Café.

Cook'n Heim

“Cook´n Heim” is a fancy restaurant where a traditional Korean-style house, beautiful garden, and a small gallery harmoniously come together. The main menu specialties are Hamburg Steak, and pasta. For Hamburg Steak, the beef is chopped and mixed without any chemical seasoning. Bread is homemade where the dough is kneaded and baked. Cook’n Heim serves no junk food, only well-being food. “Cook´n Heim’s Hamburg Steak” with mushroom cream sauce and pineapple slices as well as the “Herb Hamburg Steak” with rosemary are the most popular dishes. Pasta with cream sauce or tomato sauce and salad are also popular. The restaurant creates its own small cultural art gallery. Art pieces on exhibit are updated weekly, and visitors can enjoy the free exhibition while they are dining. When the sun sets, a movie is shown on the screen which has been installed on a wall in the garden. In the summer, it is wonderful to have dinner outside while watching a movie. TIP: The 30th customer on every Saturday receives a book as a complimentary gift.

Seoul Independent Film Festival

The Seoul Independent Movie Festival is jointly held by the Korean Film Council and the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video. The festival features a national independent film competition and gives awards regardless of theme, type, and length throughout varied genres including plays, experiential documentaries, and animated films. Also, the individual invitation program plans to introduce a variety of trends regarding independent movies. Contemporary indie film makers will gather up to envision a movie reflecting the spirit of the age and to find a good alternative to the existing films. In an effort not to make this festival a one-off event, the Seoul Independent Film Festival is gearing up to revitalize the independent film industry through indie picnic tour screenings, DVD production, online screening, and others. Seoul Independent Movie Festival volunteers have helped revive a “film jury system” for audience members to become critics. The Seoul Independent Movie Festival runs on a daily basis, which has been constantly expanded to distributing channels for independent films. The business aims to offer practical and realistic support for pre-production, distribution, and marketing in order to nurture the best independent film talent.
