Gyeongju Suhojeong

Gyeongju Suhojeong, located in front of the Gyeongju Daereungwon, is a Hanok guesthouse in a ㄱ shape. The traditional house was built in 2015 in accordance with traditional architecture using natural materials such as pine tree, red clay, straw, and others; thus, it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Planted along the wall next to the door are Korean hornbeams, top trees, maple trees, and elm trees. The climbing roses on the wall bloom in May and offer a great sight. The spacious yard with a stone table is a great place to chat with fellow guests. There are seven rooms in total and a cafeteria which doubles as a lounge. Each room with a bathroom has modern facilities that suit traditional beauty. Gyeongju Station and Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal are only five minutes away on foot, making the trip to the guesthouse by public transport easy. Sitting right next to the Hwangridangil Street, the accommodation offers great access to popular restaurants and fashion places of Gyeongju, and to major tourist attractions such as Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Balwolseong, Anjapji, and Gyochon Village.

Songam Art Museum

The gallery was built to house a private collection of antiques collected by the late Chairman Lee Hoerim. The gallery, together with all its relics and real-estate, was later donated to Incheon Metropolitan City and introduced as Songam Art Museum. Even before being donated, the gallery has been making contributions to the progress of research regarding the art and culture of Korea and China by displaying both Korean and Chinese antiques related to Korean culture. After its renovation and conversion into a museum, Songam Art Museum added a repository of Korean paintings and ceramic wares. Through continuous investment and research work, the museum is now a cultural space well-appreciated by citizens and tourists alike.

Manghaesa Temple

If you travel along Geumsan Route 29 from Gimje you’ll soon come upon the city of Mangyeong. Continue along 12.3km west of the city and you’ll be rewarded by the sight of Manghaesa Temple sitting atop a cliff on the crest of Jinbongsan Hill. True to its name, which comes from the phrase ‘mang mang dae hae’ (roughly meaning ‘a boundless sea’), the temple commands a sweeping view of the ocean below.The temple was established by the great monk Buseol Geosa during the 2nd year of King Uija of Baekje (642 AD). Years later, Dobeopsa (a Chinese monk from the Tang dynasty) renovated the temple. The temple was altered again during the reign of King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty when the great monk Jinmuk Daesa built Nakseojeon Hall.

Regular Performances of Nangye Gugak Troupe

To commemorate the soul and spirit of Nangye Park Yeon, one of the three legendary gugak (traditional Korean music) musicians with Wang Sanak and Ureuk in Korea's ancient kingdoms, Yeongdong-gun, the hometown of Nangye, has organized regular performances of Nangye Gugak Troupe sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Nangye Gukak Troupe, the first county-level public gugak performance team, was established in 1991 to inherit the spirit of Nangye. The troupe started its performance with the opening show of the National Gugak Orchestral Music Festival in 1994 and has met audiences about 100 times every year. Meanwhile, the Nangye Traditional Music Museum and the Nangye Traditional Music Instrument Experience Center were opened in 2000 and 2006 respectively, helping Yeongdong-gun be titled the Mecca of Traditional Korean Music. The regular performances given every Saturday in Yeongdong Gugak Village enhances the status of traditional Korean music and reminds us of its value and importance.
