Yongyudo Island

With 48.2-㎞ long coastline and a total area of 13.603㎢, Yongyudo Island is located near other islands such as Sinbuldo Island, Sammokdo Island, Yeongjongdo Island, Daemuuido Island, Jangbongdo Island, Modo Island, Sido Island, and Sindo Island. Yongyudo Island and Yeongjongdo Island were once connected by a bridge. The two islands were joined as one when Incheon International Airport was constructed on a reclaimed land between these two. Attractions on Yongyudo Island include Eulwangni Beach, Wangsan Beach, Seonnyeobawi Beach, Geojampo (a peaceful fishing port offering great views of the the sunrise and sunset), and Masian Beach (famous for its red, glowing evening sky). In early August, the island holds a variety of events such as a sea festival, fishing contests and shellfish harvesting, making it an ideal place for nature exploration. Because of its proximity to the airport, the area resembles a resort complex due to the availability of various accommodation facilities such as a floating hotel, casino, and a golf course. The nearby Muuido Island has a couple of beaches, hiking trails and fishing spots. Hanagae Beach is famous for its white sand and row of bungalows painted in strong primary colors. Bomunsa Temple

Bomunsa Temple is located at Seokmodo Island, which is the west of Ganghwado Island. It is said that the temple was constructed by Queen Seondeok during the Silla Era (635).  Entering the temple, you will see a 600-year-old Chinese juniper tree. Behind the tree is Seokgulamja, a small Buddhist temple in a natural cave. The entrance of the grotto is small, but the room inside is large. There is a huge millstone that the monks used for cooking beside Seokgulamja. It Is designated as Cultural Monument. If you go back side of the temple, you can see the must-see attractions here; the *Ma-aeseokbuljwasang and the Nunseop (implies eyebrow in Korean) Rock. The 10m high Ma-aeseokbuljwasang is engraved on the rock that looks like an eyebrow. The view of West Sea from Bomunsa Temple is beautiful.  The West Sea and sandy beaches of Seokmodo Island in which Bomunsa Temple is situated were featured in many films. The cultivation of Ganghwa ginseng began during the era of King Gojong (1232 A.D.) of the Goryeo Dynasty. In 1920, Ganghwado Island was designated a special district for ginseng cultivation. At the onset of the Korean War (1950-1953), the people of Gaeseong City (the birthplace of ginseng cultivation) took refuge on Ganghwado Island and began to cultivate ginseng on a large scale, which was the beginning of the production of the famous 6-year-old root of ginseng.  Ganghwado Island has the optimal environment for ginseng cultivation with clay soil, sandy loam, and a cool climate condition influenced by onshore winds. The thick root of a Ganghwa ginseng does not have any inside cavity or white interior. Goryeosan Mountain

Goryeosan Mountain, once referred to as Oryeonsan, is a mountain rich in folklore. Legend has it that in the year 416 (during the reign of King Jangsu of Goguryeo), a Buddhist monk named Cheonchukguk climbed Goryeosan Mountain and found Oryeonji Pond where the five-colored lotus flowers bloomed. The monk picked the lotus flower petals and blew them into the air. He then built a temple where each of the petals had landed, naming the temples according to their corresponding color: Jeokseoksa, formerly Jeokryeonsa Temple (red lotus), Baengnyeonsa Temple (white lotus), Cheongryeonsa Temple (blue lotus), Hwangryeonsa Temple (yellow lotus), and Heungnyeonsa Temple (black lotus).Around 130 dolmens are distributed along the foot of Goryeosan Mountain. Sirumisan Mountain, on the northern side of Goryeosan Mountain is said to have been the birthplace of General Yeongaesomun of the Goguryeo Kingdom.
