Gangwon-do(Taebaek-si)

Taebaek Station was originally called Hwangji Station when the rail first opened its route between Cheolam and Hwangji on December 10, 1962. An additional route from Gohan to Taebaek opened on October 6, 1974 and then the Taebaek Line eventually ran from Jecheon to Taebaek. Taebaek Station was mainly used by industrial trains and officially changed its name to Taebaek Station on December 1, 1984 in accordance with the name change of Hwangji-eup to Taebaek-si. When the Taebaek Line was initially opened, it was the only transportation method for residents of the Yeongdong area. It carried anthracite nation-wide as an industrial train, but it stopped this practice due to a policy change regarding coal. Located in the heart of Taebaek-si, a former coal town, Taebaek Station became a popular vacation spot. Tourists mainly from Seoul, Chungcheon-do and Jeolla-do areas visit the area by train. It offers clean, comfortable places and kind services to all visitors.


Gangwon-do(Pyeongchang-gun)

Pyeongchang Donggang Freshwater Ecology Fish Center opened to the public in July 2009 in an effort to provide the general public with a chance to observe the indigenous fish of Donggang River and learn more about the local ecology. Along with Hemibarbus mylodon, Natural Monument No. 259, the center presents 45 unique species of freshwater fish including Rhynchocypris kumganensis, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Zacco temminckii, and Ssoragi. At the center there are a variety of hands-on experience programs. Walk through a gigantic model of a fish’s stomach and explore its internal organs. Or, check out the 3D theater, virtual rafting program, or the huge tank where you can observe and touch an array of freshwater fish. There is also an outdoor training center where you can try your hand at rock climbing.  


Gangwon-do(Taebaek-si)

This traditional guesthouse overlooks Taebaeksan Mountain, the summit of Hambaeksan Mountain, and the ski hills of O2 Resort. The houses on the site were moved from the ancient villages of Gyeongju, Yeongcheon and Gyeongsan in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and then restored.Some houses are equipped with a furnace for heating in the winter. The inner and outer walls of the buildings are made with red clay. There is a small detached room similar to a pavilion, called cheongpungnu, on both sides of the gate. The hanok buildings were built using good lumber that has lasted more than 200 years old. Consisting of 6 buildings in total, this traditional guesthouse was remodeled to provide more modernized facilities for guests.The hanok is equipped with open yard great for outdoor activities, where visitors can set up and enjoy Korean barbeques, or sit on a straw mat or wooden bench to view dazzling stars in the peaceful rural night sky. The owner may offer you treats during your stay; sweet, juicy watermelon in summer for a cooling effect or baked sweet potatoes on winter nights to fight the cold temperatures in the country side.Also, traditional folk games are available, as well as experience programs like watching a traditional wedding ceremony, playing yutnori, making rice cakes and more are ready. Gangwon-do(Hoengseong-gun)

Anheung Jjinppang Village is located along National Highway 42, connecting Seoul and Gangneung. Travelers passing Daegwallyeong on their way to Seoul from the Yeongdong area often stopped here to have a light lunch from old times. Anheung jjinppang (Anheung-style steamed bun) was enough to satisfy their hunger. Over time, Anheung jjinppang has become one of Korea's famous nostalgic snacks. Jucheongang River, beginning from Taegisan Mountain and flowing through Yeongwol, offers the proper humid condition perfect for the bun's aging process. As of now, there are over 10 shops dedicated to selling steamed buns in the village. Since the early 1990s, over one million people have come to Anheung Jjinppang Village to get these steamed buns which became popular through word-of-mouth. Anheung jjinppang is made with high-quality red bean, using the traditional cooking process that creates the homemade flavor, which is immediatedly recognized by the mouth that has become used to instant foods.


Gangwon-do(Yangyang-gun)

Namdaecheon Stream begins in the Mt. Odaesan Buyeon-dong Valley, gaining size and strength as it nears Eoseongjeolli in Hyeonbuk-myeon before reaching the East Sea. Salmon that were spawned in Namdaecheon Stream swim to the East Sea to grow for three to five years in the Bering Sea before returning to Namdaecheon Stream between late October and November.The Salmon Festival in Yangyang began as a salmon-fishing contest in mid November 1996, and has been held as Yangyang-gun’s festival since 1997. Every year, it offers a variety of salmon-related events and attracts a large crowd of people eager to fish for salmon.Festival Program: Immediately following official events such as Yongwangje (a ritual praying for a good catch) Bonghaeng and the opening ceremony, fun-packed programs await visitors. These include catching a salmon/trout with the bare hands, and salmon-cooking exhibits. The bare-hand salmon-catching continues to draw more and more participants every year, and is particularly popular with families, as all members can enjoy fun moments together.For this event, the office of Yangyang-gun prepares a total of about 3,000 salmon, some supplied by the Yangyang Naesumyeon Research Center and others netted by professional fishers. The salmon are then released in part of the stream about 30 centimeters deep, which is blocked by a net on either end. The fish caught by participants can either be cooked on-site or cut and cleaned to take home.Festival Highlights: Most salmon are over 40 centimeters long and are great fun to catch. The food court also offers a variety of salmon dishes to tempt visitors' appetites. The Namdaecheon Stream runs near the famous Mt. Seoraksan, which is great for hiking and for viewing the changing colors of the foliage in late fall. 


Gangwon-do(Sokcho-si)

Gangwon-do(Cheorwon-gun)

After the fall harvest season, the fields on the Cheorwon Plain are littered with fallen grains, providing an abundant source of food for migratory birds. Meanwhile, the well-preserved ecosystem of the Demilitarized Zone provides clean water and a healthy habitat, making the Cheorwon area a paradise for migratory birds.Cranes stalking around the fields and birds taking off en masse from the reservoir make bird watchers exclaim in awe. In Cheorwon, which boasts the biggest white-fronted goose population in Korea, you can see over 110 species of birds, some of which are protected as national treasures. Examples include red-crowned cranes, vultures, white-tailed sea eagles, and golden eagles as well as mallards and spot-billed ducks, which migrate to Korea for the winter.The most spectacular views are generally at sunrise, between noon and 2pm, and at sunset, and for the rest of daylight hours you can choose from a wide variety of attractions located near the demarcation line. North Korean infiltrating the second tunnel, Woljeong Station Observation Deck, the former Labour Party building, Baekmagoji highland and Dopiansa Temple all reside nearby. Since the Cheorwon Plain is located north of the Civilian Control Line and normally not opened to civilian access, the ecosystem is very well preserved.


Gangwon-do(Inje-gun)

Sibiseonnyeotang Valley (Valley of the Twelve Angels’ Bath) is located at the base Seoraksan Mountain. It is also referred to as Tangsugol or Tangsudong Valley. The valley got its name from a myth that angels once came down to bathe in its flowing rivers. However, there are only eight baths.Due to fluvial erosion, there is a steep hole in this valley, and many baths and waterfalls of various shapes are stretched over an 8 km distance. Pass Ungbong Waterfall and the first bath and Dok-tang appear. Then walk past Buk-tang, Rainbow-tang, Peach-tang, and the path will end with the last bath, Yong-tang.Of these baths, the 7th bath is called Peach-tang, named after the traditional shape of the bath. The deeply delved rock behind the back of the waterfall is more beautiful than the bath under the waterfall. Past the Peach-tang is another clean, steep bath. From there, a 5-minute walk to the right will lead you to another waterfall and a pool. The water from Daeseungryeong and Mt.Ansan is connected to Namgyo-ri, Buk-myeon. This is an 8-km valley, which takes approximately two hours from the baths to Namgyo-ri. There are iron bridges over the baths for visitors to cross.


Gangwon-do(Pyeongchang-gun)

In the secluded mountain village of Gangwon-do Pyeongchang lies the filming location of “Welcome to Dongmakgol,”. Numerous props used during the fiming of the movie can still be found, including a large tree, a small stream, a stone bridge, wooden swings, a drinking well, and washing area. The best part about this village is that visitors can tour the area free of charge. * Film Synopsis The film “Welcome to Dongmakgol” is set during the Korean War. It opens with Private Smith (Steve Taschler) crashing in on the scene, then Lee Su-hwa (Jeong Jae-yeong) of the North Korean People’s Army joining in with a couple of soldiers, and Pyo Hyeon-cheol (Sin Ha-gyun) following with another fellow soldier from the Korean Army after being separated from the main forces. A group of people that shouldn’t be together meet in the peaceful village of Dongmakgol, creating immense tension as the movie progresses. The entire movie is set deep in the mountains of Gangwon-do, in a village unaware of the current war, in Dongmakgol. Here, the forces of the South Korean Army, North Korean Army, and the U.S. Army clash in opposition, but meet an unusual character named Yeo-il (Kang Hye-jeong). Yeo-il, along with the citizens of Dongmakgol, are unaware of the dangers of a grenade, and don’t even know the meaning of “put your hands up”. As the story continues, the three forces eventually create a friendship as they work in the fields, catch a wild boar, and go sledding in the grassy fields. However, peace during wartime can only last so long...
