Gangwon-do(Sokcho-si)

Abai Ferry is a special way to get across the Sokcho harbor, separating downtown Sokcho from Abai Village. The distance is quite small, only reaching about 50m across, but riding one of the two ferries across is much quicker than going around by land. The ferry must be pulled across by rope by all passengers, excluding the elderly. This unique experience can only be found in Sokcho.

The Bosingak Belfry was used during the Joseon Dynasty to keep the time. There were four gates in Seoul that allowed people in and out. At 4 a.m., the bell would ring 33 times and then the gates were opened. At 10 p.m. the bell would ring 28 times and the gates would close. The bell served as a siren. The original bell melted in that spot due to a fire accident. In 1468, the bell was remade and still exists today. However, for preservation purposes that bell now sits in the national museum. The bell that replaced it in Jongno was made in 1985 with contributions from the public. The Bosingak Belfry was built by the Seoul Municipal Government in 1979 and is restricted on normal days. Currently, a daily bell-ringing ceremony is conducted at Bosingak. Pork belly, a cut that is greatly beloved by people in Korea, is a main staple of Korean barbeque. In Korean dramas, it’s very common to see people enjoying samgyeopsal with soju and has become an almost iconic part of Korean food culture. Wrapping the meat with rice, garlic, and ssamjang (bean paste) in lettuce is a popular way to eat samgyeopsal. Gwangju(Dong-gu)

Daein Market in Gwangju is a wonderul example of the changes traditional markets have gone through to remain relavent in the modern world. Originally the community center for all living needs, including produce and household goods, the market lost much interest in the mid-1990s with the influx of large marts. From that point on, many shops began to close down as there was no business. However, the market saw a revival in 2008 during the Gwangju Biennale. Many of the available shop spaces were rented out to host small art exhibitions, creating a unique art market. Thanks to this effort, Daein Market was designated a Cultural Attraction in 2013. The market continues to have a strong connection with the art that saved it, and the vendors and artists live and work together in harmony. The market also draws in a lot of interest from the community through their weekly night markets, taking place every Saturday.


Gangwon-do(Gangneung-si)

Jumunjin Seafood Market was founded in 1936 and is situated in Gangneung next to Jumunjin Port, home to a large fleet of squid boats. It is the largest seafood market on the East Coast and includes a dried seafood market and a sashimi center. The market is a favorite among both Koreans and international visitors. Market specialties include a variety of fresh seafood caught on the East Coast such as squid, mackerel, pollacks, pikes, and crabs. At the market, visitors can purchase these items (and a number of dried seafood products) at inexpensive prices, as well as get a taste of fresh, delicious sashimi. In addition, the market hosts a variety of fun events such as the Blowfish Festival and Squid Festival.
