Geumgang Migratory Bird Observatory

The Geumgang Migratory Bird Observatory is located at Geumgang Estuary (Gunsan-si), one of the country’s most representative sites for migratory birds. With Geumgangho Lake, wide spreads of farmland, and an abundance of reeds and tidelands, the estuary draws flocks of migratory birds each winter.From the Migratory Bird Observatory, the first of its kind in Korea, visitors can watch birds in their natural habit. For an even deeper look at the patterns of these feathered travelers, the museum has on display bird specimens and exhibits depicting the hatching of bird eggs. Other facilities include the Geumgang Bird Park and the Ecological Center.In autumn of every year, the Gunsan International Migratory Bird Festival takes place at the Geumgang Migratory Bird Observatory, Geumgangho Lake, and Saemangeum area. One of the most popular programs at the festival is the bird-watching tour. The sight of tens of thousands of migratory birds flying overhead is truly astounding. The tour runs from the festival period all the way until the end of February.

Jeonju Daesaseup Festival

Daesaseup originated from Pansori music that first appeared around the time of King Yeongjo’s reign (Joseon Dynasty) and has been passed down until today. The Jeonju Daesaseup Festival goes back to the time when outstanding performers from around the nation were invited for an all-night song festival on the eve of the winter solstice. This later developed into a competition, and today, gifted singers from around the nation gather to compete. Event Programs: The Daesaseup Festival, one of the four major cultural festivals of Jeonju, has served to discover new, talented singers, whose artistry has greatly contributed to promoting Korean folk culture overseas. This is a rare opportunity to experience all types of traditional Korean culture. The festival categories include Pansori master, Pansori general, farmer’s music, dance, musical instruments, three-line poetry, folk songs, Gayageum music, and archery. Visit this festival devoted to Korean folk music, which is soothing for the heart and spirit. Major Highlights: Each category has its own unique beauty and artistic value. For example, just listening to the farmer’s music is exhilarating. On the last day of the festival, there is a special performance by the winners in each category, so don’t miss it!

Donggang Museum of Photography
Gangwon-do(Yeongwol-gun)

Donggang Museum of Photography, Korea’s first-ever public photo museum, opened in July 2005. Housed in a building with one basement level and two ground levels, the museum has a permanent exhibition hall and two special exhibition halls. There is also an outdoor gallery and a lecture hall.Some of the museum exhibits include donations by photo artists who participated in the Donggang Photo Festival, an event held since 2002, together with donations by winners of the Donggang Photo Award. Visitors will also find photos highlighting the natural and cultural heritage of Yeongwol and about 800 photos taken by town residents. Another noteworthy addition is the exhibition of 130 classic cameras, a must for camera enthusiasts and aficionados.

Jeungsan Beach

A small and quiet beach, Jeungsan is close to Chotdae (Candlestick) Bawi Rock in Chuam Beach, which is famous for its breathtaking sunrises. With an average depth of 1 to 2 meters, it attracts numerous vacationers in the summer. Nearby is Suro Buin Park where visitors find the Dragon Ball structure that grants peoples’ wishes. Huhuam Temple
Gangwon-do(Yangyang-gun)

Huhuam Temple can be found next to National Highway No. 7 in Gwangjin-ri, Hyeonnam-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do after Namae Harbor. The temple building was built only 10 years ago and behind the temple, there is a wide flat rock resembling a turtle peeking out of the ocean. In addition, there is a rock which is naturally shaped similar to Buddha. The location makes it seem as if the turtle-shaped rock is bowing down to Buddha. Also, on top of the cliff on the upper right side of this Buddha statue there are two big rocks, called “Jungbawi.” These rocks are shaped like monks carrying a moktak (wooden percussion instrument used for chanting by Buddhist clergy) and bowing to the statue, adding an even more amazing atmosphere to the temple area.

Yeongchwisan Azalea Festival

Yeongchwisan Mountain in Yeosu has long been thought of as a holy mountain and was once the site of rituals in which the people pleaded for rain. In the spring, the mountainsides transform into a sea of pink as the azaleas come into full bloom. The annual Yeongchwisan Azalea Flower Festival in April celebrates the beauty of the mountain flowers through a variety of outdoor performances and programs such as the Miss Azalea Flower Pageant.
