New Year Festival, Seol

"New Year Festival, Seol" is an event held by the National Folk Museum of Korea. Kick start this year by joining New Year Festival Seol. In celebrating the year of the monkey, the museum will present varied programs that are themed with monkeys as well as offering traditional folk experiences, Seollal cultural programs and a special exhibition. Over 30 programs will run for 5 days, offering plenty of opportunities to learn about Seollal customs and get a deeper understanding on the meaning of Seollal. Admission to the museum is free of charge and no reservation is required for most of the activites. Seollal traditions include fortune telling and wishing for good luck in the New Year. Namwon Newly-appointed Governor’s Procession
Jeollabuk-do(Namwon-si)

Namwon Newly-appointed Governor’s Procession is a fusion performance about the parade for celebrating the appointment of Byeon Hak-do as Namwon governor in the story of Chunhyang, set in Gwanghallu Garden, one of Namwon’s representative cultural resource. The event connected to Gwanghallu Garden and the Chunhayng Theme Park takes place from April to November every year, giving various spectacles and activities to visitors. The parade starts from the Plaza of Love and ends at Gwanghallu Garden, where various shows such as Gisaeng Jeomgo, military processional music performance, Yukbang performance, and a fan dance by gisaeng (female entertainers) are performed. In addition, fun activities like experiencing the punishment of the Joseon Dynasty, folk games, and a photo event are arranged for visitors. This performance has been designated as a Standing Cultural Tourism Program for nine consecutive years since 2007.

Sainam Rock (단양 사인암)

Sainam Rock, located in Sainam-ri, Daegang-myeon, is one of eight scenic areas in Danyang, and is located in the southeast side of Danyang-gun, along with Sangseonam Rock, Jungseonam Rock, and Haseonam Rock of Seonam Valley. The Sainam Rock is a rugged outcropping with an inspiring x_height of 70 meters, and the deep blue Namjocheon Stream passes in front of it, located in the southern part of Danyang-gun. Most visitors to Danyang Eight Scenic Views tend to come to the rock as their first destination due to the good condition of the road. Also, Unseongugok Valley flows in front of Sainam Rock. The rock was picked as the most picturesque place among the Eight Scenic Views. On the cliff, there is a phrase carved by Utak’s own handwriting, as well as old pine trees on a rock floor that is reminiscent of the Haegeumgang River. Sainam was named after the great scholar Yeokdong Utak during Goryeo Period. He had taken up a public service to assist a king in a position called sain (사인), and then he retired to his hometown of Danyang, starting out teaching young students. For this story, a governor of Danyang named the rock Sainam to commemorate his achievement during King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty.

Gwanseong Solbat Beach

[Jeungdo Mosilgil Course 3] A Thousand Year Forest Walk

Jeungdo Mosilgil is a 42.7km-long walking path along the coastline of Jeungdo Island, the first Slow City in Asia located off the southwestern coast of the Korean peninsula. Jeungdo Mosilgil Course 3, also known as 'A Thousand Year Forest Walk,' connects from Jjangddungeodari Bridge towards Ujeon Beach, through Thousand Year Pine Forest, and to Mud Flat Museum.

Ganwol Recreational Forest

The Ganwol Natural Recreation Forest is situated on Ganwolsan Mountain, which is part of the “Yeongnam Alps.” The forest offers various outdoor leisure facilities such as forest bathing paths, training sites, hiking trails, a children’s play ground, tennis courts, and an observatory. The camping site inside the forest can accommodate up to 700 people, and there are small cooking areas, shower facilities, a sports ground, and various other convenience facilities. The Railroad Disconnection Point of the Gyeongwon Line (Sintalli station) (경원선 철도중단점-신탄리역)

Before the Korean War, trains used to run along the Gyeongwon Line, transporting people and goods between Seoul and Wonsan, but now they turn back at Sintan-ri station. There is no longer a railline running past the old Cheorwon station and across the armistice line, from Sintan-ri station to Pyeonggang. North Korea changed the name of the Gyeongwon Line that connects Pyeonggang to Sepo, Gosan, Tongjiwon, Wonsan, and Gowon to the ‘Gangwon Line’ many years ago. Near Sintan-ri station is a signpost that says, ‘We want to be back on track,’ symbolizing that this area is the northernmost point of the Gyeongwon Line in South Korea, resonating with a sense of sadness for South Koreans over the continuing division of the peninsula.
