Museum of Musical Instruments of the World

Museum of Musical Instruments of the World is the first Korean museum that collects musical instruments from all over the world. At present, it houses about 500 musical instruments from about 70 countries including African percussions (made with rocks, trees, animal’s bone such as balafon, jembe, didgeridoo, angklung, and others), musical instruments from the Middle East, Islamic northeast Asia, and an island country in the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can attempt to play the instrument in person at the designated hands-on activity area, and try on traditional costume, as well as, other entertainment activity like pungmul (traditional Korean percussions). Visitors who don’t get enough by just playing and touching the instrument can also take part in the folk music lectures to learn more about their favorite musical instrument that features a cultural artistic hands-on activity space. In addition, to provide more knowledge on the regional culture, the museum showcases musical instrument with dolls of respective region's traditional costume, pungmul, and painting.

Changnyongmun Gate

Cheongchoho Lake

Cheongchoho Lake is a lagoon that is connected to the East Sea, with an area of 1.3 Km2 and an approximate circumference of 5 Km. Located in the center of the city, the lake can be viewed easily from downtown Sokcho. Adjacent to Cheongchoho Lake, one of Sokcho’s 8 must-sees, is the Expo Tower, Expo World, and Expo Excursion Steamer. These were constructed for the 1999 Gangwon International Tourism Expo. The Expo tower rises 73.4 meters high with an observatory. An I-MAX theater is located in Expo World and an Ecology Park is nearby. Additionally, the Expo Excursion Steamer can be taken around the entire lake for great views of the surrounding area.

Yongmunsa Temple(Yongmunsan Mountain)

Yongmunsa Temple (용문사) is located about 9km northeast from Yongmun station on the Jungang line. It was built during the Silla Kingdom and reconstructed during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. It was badly damaged during the Korean War, but was restored and now consists of three buildings, the main hall, daeungjeon, and the bell tower. Its courtyard contains the largest gingko tree in the East, which is 1,100 years old, measures 60m in x_height and 14m in circumference and is designated and protected as natural monument no. 30. Legend says the great Buddhist monk Uisang, who lived during the Silla Kingdom, stuck his staff in the earth, and the tree grew out of the simple staff.

It has a collection of 4,500 phonographs, 150,000 phonograph records, 1,000 books, and 5,000 items from 20 nations.1) World of Sound: The place for history of Sound. It displays gothic and renaissance organs, music boxes, radios and record players.2) World of Image: The place for silent films and biography films of masterminds and Edison. It displays Edison projectors and televisions, especially one made by Baird, John Logie (1888.8.13 ~ 1946.6.14) in 1925.3) World of Light: Displays items from Gas lamps to the original light bulb that Edison made, an electric generator of those days, the bamboo filament light bulb and the first wall-attached electric lamp. The wall-attached electric lamp is the part of the collection that was successfully accepted at Sotheby's auction in 1992.4) Edison Invention Hall: Displays 850 inventions of Edison's, including t three of his greatest inventions - phonographs, light bulbs and projectors.
