Namquidang’s Hanok Story (남취당의 한옥이야기)

Namquidang’s Hanok Story is a traditional hanok guesthouse located at the foot of the Manisan Mountain in Ganghwado Island. Namquidang means “the house that collects the energy of the green mountain.” The backyard is surrounded by the Manisan Mountain, whereas in front of the house lies a wide 3.3 km2fieldwiththeYeongjongdoIslandinview. The house was built by the owner himself who brought pine trees from Gangwondo; set up the frame in the traditional method without using nails; laid red-clay bricks; and finished the hanok with the Wonju Hanji. Even after 15 years, the delicate scent of wood penetrates to every corner of the structure. There are two buildings, Mariul (main building) and Ariul (detached building) in the guest house with 5 rooms to which kitchens and bathrooms are attached. Over the creaky wooden door are beams with engravings, roofs with exposed rafters, and windows and doors with Hanji attached on them. The lighting wrapped with Hanji emits soft lights and beddings made from cotton fabric provide a comfortable bedtime experience. At night, the stone lighting the yard creates a refined atmosphere. In the living room of the main building of Mariul is a separate tea room called “Haewon.” It is a space for a laid-back tea time against the background of the field over the window. In the Ariul (detached building), which is equipped with red clay Ondol system heated by oak trees, guests can have sweet potato roasting experience. Traditional dyeing and making of Gangjeong, a traditional Korean dessert, is also possible. Just inquire over the phone during room booking; it costs 10,000 won per person. Famous tourist attractions in Ganghwado Island including Dongmak Beach, Jeondeungsa Temple, Manisan Mountain, and Hamheodongcheon Valley are 5-10 minutes away by car.

Joryeongsan Mountain
Gyeongsangbuk-do(Mungyeong-si)

Joryeongsan Mountain divides Mungyeong (Gyeongsangbuk-do) and Goesan (Chungcheongbuk-do), and is situated at the far end of Baekdudaegan (the mountain range connecting Baekdusan and Jirisan). The mountain is picturesque with its surroundings of dense forest, steep rocky areas, strangely shaped peaks and old trees. It has a grand scale of mountain ridge and high altitude. However, as the hiking trail starts at 529m on Ihwaryeong, it is not that tough. Nearby locations include Sinseongbong Peak and Mapaebong Peak, as well as Joryeongsan Recreational Forest.

Birosa Temple
Gyeongsangbuk-do(Yeongju-si)

Birosa is a temple located at the southern foot of Birobong, the highest peak of Sobaeksan Mountain. It was founded by revered Buddhist monk Uisang Daesa in the 20th year of King Munmu’s reign (680 A.D.) during the Silla Kingdom. The temple’s Buddha statue and the flagpole supports reveal the long history of this ancient temple. To the left of the entrance to Birosa Temple stand a pair of flagpole supports that are official called Yeongju Samgadong Dangganjiju. The 4.8 meter-high flagpole supports facing each other have a meticulous structure. Inside the temple precincts is Jingongdaesa Bobeoptapbi, a stele with a stone turtle base erected in honor of the great monk Jingong Daesa. The temple enshrines the Amitabha and Vairocana Buddha statues, which were created during the Silla Kingdom in the late 9th century. Both of these Buddha statues realistically depict the human form, and show similar characteristics, which reveal that they were crafted by the same artisan. Cheonsuman Bay emerged as a habitat for migratory birds as a result of a reclamation project that was undertaken in 1984. A breakwater was built around this area, which created Ganwolho Lake and Bunamho Lake. Moreover, a vast agricultural land spanning 6,400 hectares was formed on what used to be a mud flat. The monthly average temperature of Cheonsuman Bay area between October and March is about 1.2 degree Celsius higher than inland areas with same latitude because of its oceanic climate. Such geographical conditions have made Cheonsuman Bay an ideal wintering site for migratory birds. Cheonsuman Bay is located midway along the migration route of birds migrating from northern Siberia or Manchuria to Southeast Asia. As a result, Cheonsuman Bay has become home to nearly 200 different species of migratory birds that can be watched all year round. In the winter, the area becomes a wintering site for over 300 thousand ducks and wild geese, as well as a wide variety of endangered species like storks, spoonbills, mute swans, and white-naped cranes.
