Jirisan History Museum

The vast region of the Gurye Special Tourist Zone comprises Toji-myeon, Gwangui-myeon and Sandong-myeon, which has a river and an open field surrounding the mountainous area. Every part of Gurye deserves the title of Special Tourist Zone for offering many things to see. Well-known for its rich soil, the most outstanding natural resources of Gurye is Jirisan National Park, the first to be designated as a national park, and Seomjingang River. Every year, many hikers visit Jirisan National Park, also called the “bosom of a mother.” The park is cherished for its unpolluted scenery, such as its deep and wide geographical features and crystal clear valleys. The park offers diverse hiking trails and has mountain retreats for backpackers. Jirisan Dulegil Trail that runs along the periphery of Jirisan Mountain is where one could enjoy the experience of mountain glens, different from mountaineering. On their way hikers and trekkers can see groups of Sansuyu (cornus fruit) in spring as well as the autumnal tints of the mountain and valley in autumn. Another strength is that the park has different types of accommodations including Hanok (Korean traditional house) homestay and a guest house, apart from leisure facilities including hot springs in Jirisan. The park is a great place for historical inquiries as it is filled with historic temples, including Hwaeomsa Temple and Yeongoksa Temple, and historic relics. Flowing from Gokseong to Hadong, Seomjingang River creates a tranquil ambience. The cleanest ever in Korea, a large number of marsh snails and sweetfish live in this river. Bogeumjari is an antique hanok accommodation located in Gangjin Hanok Village. When she was about to retire after 40 years of career, the owner had a dream to return to her hometown and build a house with a large garden. She finished her living at an apartment, prepared the ground, set the frame with woods, and put up the tiled roof. She named the house Bogeumjari (nest) as she wished her daughter who led a busy life in a city with her children can visit the house to take a rest, as well as the travelers who visit Gangjin. The C-shaped hanok has to rooms. One is a floor-heated room that has walls made of cypress, and the heating system is operated by burning woods in the furnace. Another has a separate door that leads to an outdoor upper floor and a pavilion. Sitting on the pavilion in the middle of the garden, you can see the ridge of Wolchulsan Mountain and the greenness green tea field at a glance. On the first day of your visit, you will be served simple tea and fruits. Free breakfast cooked with vegetables from the family garden tastes the flavor of Jeollanam-do.

Guryongpo 5-Day Market

About 8km past Pohang Hyeongsan Rotary and Hyeongsangyo Bridge, you will see the entrance to the town of Guryongpo-eup and a tourist map of Guryongpo beside it. In Guryongpo-eup, the Guryongpo Five-Day Market is held on the 3rd, 8th, 13th, 23rd, and 28th of every month. The Five-Day Market is held not only at the market, but also at areas around Changjucheon Stream. The market first started when a  small village was formed around Guryongpo Port. In the 1950s and 60s, when Guryongpo was incorporated into the county of Yeongil-gun, Guryongpo Market flourished because it became the main market of Yeongil-gun County. Nowadays, thanks to the rows of seafood restaurants inside, the market became even more popular among seafood lovers. The market carries a wide variety of fresh vegetables and produce, herbs, grains, and regional specialties. The seafood at the market is delivered fresh from Guryongpo Port. The squid at Guryongpo Port, which is also the specialty of the market, makes up about 70% of the total catch in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The market is also frequently visited by seafood gourmets for its squid.

Gajisan Provincial Park

The residual mountains of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range form ten tall peaks in the Yeongnam region. Dubbed the ‘Yeongnam Alps,’ these peaks include Chwiseosan (1,092 meters, also called Yeongchwisan), Sinbulsan (1,209 meters), Cheonhwangsan (1,189 meters), Unmunsan (1,188 meters), Goheonsan (1,033 meters), Munboksan (1,013 meters), and Gajisan mountains. This group of mountains is uniquely covered with reeds. Gajisan Mountain is the tallest of this group, rising above mountains almost 1,000 meters high. An attraction of hiking in Gajisan Mountain is that various large, oddly shaped rock peaks can be seen from the mountain trail. To the east of the mountain is Seongnamsa Temple built during the Silla Kingdom. Today, only Buddhist nuns remain, but there are relics like the budo stupa of National Master Doui (Treasure 369) and a three-story stone pagoda.
