Guryongpo 5-Day Market
Gyeongsangbuk-do(Pohang-si)

About 8km past Pohang Hyeongsan Rotary and Hyeongsangyo Bridge, you will see the entrance to the town of Guryongpo-eup and a tourist map of Guryongpo beside it. In Guryongpo-eup, the Guryongpo Five-Day Market is held on the 3rd, 8th, 13th, 23rd, and 28th of every month. The Five-Day Market is held not only at the market, but also at areas around Changjucheon Stream. The market first started when a  small village was formed around Guryongpo Port. In the 1950s and 60s, when Guryongpo was incorporated into the county of Yeongil-gun, Guryongpo Market flourished because it became the main market of Yeongil-gun County. Nowadays, thanks to the rows of seafood restaurants inside, the market became even more popular among seafood lovers. The market carries a wide variety of fresh vegetables and produce, herbs, grains, and regional specialties. The seafood at the market is delivered fresh from Guryongpo Port. The squid at Guryongpo Port, which is also the specialty of the market, makes up about 70% of the total catch in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The market is also frequently visited by seafood gourmets for its squid.

Daedunsan Provincial Park (Geumsan) (대둔산도립공원 - 금산)

The Great Monk Wonhyo (617-686) once acclaimed that four days was not enough to appreciate the beauty of Daedunsan Mountain in full. The mountain is divided into three areas Geumsan, Nonsan, and Wanju and each has distinct characteristics and charms. The Geumsan area is home to a battlefield from the Imjin Waeran War (Japanese Invasion, 1592-1598) and the historic Taegosa Temple. The Nonsan area is noted for its scenic forests, valleys, and brooks, while the Wanju area is defined by grandiose rock peaks. Daedunsan is especially beautiful in the fall when its rock peaks are surrounded by the autumnal tints of turning leaves.

Yumyeongsan Mountain (Mayusan Mountain) (유명산)

Originally, no name was given to this mountain on topographical maps. But in 1973, when the Empor Alpine Club reached the mountain during a hike across the nation, the club members named it after Jin Yu-myeong, a member of the expedition. On old maps, the mountain had been called Mayusan Mountain because of the horses raised in the area, but today it is more widely known as Yumyeongsan Mountain. The trail that starts from Yangpyeong leads to an expansive and open grassland. The hiking trails are also connected to those of Mount Daebusan and Mount Sogunisan. On the summit, there is a pile of stones, and the view from the top is splendid.

This hanok (traditional Korean house) guesthouse is nestled in the folds of Wolchulsan Mountain, in Gangjin’s Dalbit Hanok Village, a collection of hanok houses. The treasure of this place is the view of nature: Sitting on numaru (raised floor space), which has an open view to the three sides, one has a view of the Wolchulsan National Park and the green tea fields nearby. Rooms are decorated with folk painting, dried flowers, and old-style ornaments to recreate the comfortable and charming atmosphere of rural Korea. Sunlight and moonlight filter between the screen doors, making one realize staying in a hanok building. Dalbit Room has a numaru for an even better view, where one can enjoy a cup of tea while appreciating the view of nature. Smile Room has access to jjongmaru (balcony). Another important thing that must be mentioned at Dalbit Smile is its breakfast: the owner, who is licensed in Korean and Chinese cuisine, offers a robust table of heartwarming home food every morning. It takes about 5 min by car to reach Gangjin’s famous tourist sites like Baegundong Garden and Gangjin Dawon (tea plantation), while Wolchulsan National Park is reachable in 10 min.

Naebyeonsan Mountain (내변산)

The Byeonsanbando Peninsula has a shoreline that stretches 99 kilometers, protruding into the west sea in Jeollabuk-do, with the Saemangeum, the world’s longest man-made sea barrier, to the north and Gomsoman Bay at its south shore. The peninsula is part of Byeonsanbando National Park, which is widely known for its natural beauty. Its interior mountain range is known as Naebyeonsan Mountain (Inner Byeonsan Mt.) while the outer region near the sea is known as Oebyeonsan Mountain (Outer Byeonsan Mt.). The center of Mt. Naebyeonsan includes the highest peak of Byeonsanbando peninsula, Uisangbong Peak (509 meters) and Nakjodae (Sunset Viewpoint), Wolmyeongam Hermitage, Bongnaegugok Valley as well as Jiksopokpo Waterfall. The surrounding mountains and valleys of Mt. Byeonsan are not particularly high, standing at an altitude of around 500-600 meters, but the magnificent formation of mountains and valleys as well as the breathtaking view of the sunset from Nakjodae make it a must-see sight. The center of Mt. Naebyeonsan is the area that includes the highest peak of Byeonsanbando peninsula, Uisangbong Peak (509 meters) and Nakjodae (Sunset Viewpoint), Wolmyeongam Hermitage, Bongnaegugok Valley as well as Jiksopokpo Waterfall.
