Taereung / Gangneung (a.k.a, Taegangneung) [UNESCO World Heritage]

Designated as Historical Site No. 201, Taereung Gangneung is comprised of two tombs. Taereung Royal Tomb (태릉) houses the burial mound of Queen Munjeong who was the second queen of King Jungjong, the 11th King of the Joseon Dynasty, and Gangneung Royal Tomb (강릉) houses the burial mounds of King Myeongjong, the 13th King of Joseon Dynasty, and Queen Insunwanghu. King Myeongjong ascended the throne after his elder brother, King Injong when he was twelve years old at Geunjeongjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1545. The king’s mother, Queen Munjeong ruled behind the scenes, acting as guardian for eight years. First held in 1997, the Goyang International Flower Exhibition has attracted about over 5.7 million visitors thus far, including the 8th Flower Exhibition in 2014. The event is considered to be Korea’s representative international flower exhibition. This year’s festival will be taken place in Ilsan Lake Park in Goyang city from April to May with 320 related organizations, groups, and companies from 35 countries, to showcase flowers and various products made with flowers. Also, unique and rare plants exhibition, indoor garden decorated with flower art pieces, outdoor theme parks, making of flower plant experience, flower arrangement contests, as well as other cultural events and performances will be planned to add more joy to the flower festival.

Sarabong Park

Sarabong Park is a 143-meter hill located just east of Dongmun Rotary in Jeju. The park is best known for its spectacular sunset views, which is often regarded as a perfect complement to Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak's view of the sunrise.To the north of Sarabong Park is a spectacular view of the expansive blue waters and to the south is Hallasan Mountain. Along the way to the park is Mochungsa Temple and to the east lies Byeoldobong Peak, where a paragliding runway is located. At the foot of Sarabong is Udang Library. The road from the library, passing behind Sarabong Peak to Jeju Harbor and to Tapdong provides a very scenic driving route.

Baek-Je Won is a cultural complex made up of a botanical garden and the Buyeo Museum. The botanical garden has wild plants grown in the Baekje area. It is smaller than most botanical gardens but the plants here are categorized together according to their characteristics. Plants are displayed like artworks to blend together with Buyeo's cultural relics, therefore tranforming the garden into a space to see both experience both nature and history together. The Buyeo Museum has exhibits showcasing the lifestyle of Buyeo's people from the Baekje period to the modern times. Exhibits include materials related to plants and agriculture, cultural heritage artifacts, folklore materials such as ceramics, and modern-day items like stamps, music items and movie posters.

Jongjeom Tteok-bokki

Jongjeom has been open for 25 years. Initially, it was located at the end of Tteok-bokki Street, which is how it earned the name Jongjeom, meaning "the end of the line." (Currently, several other restaurants have opened up around Jeongjeom’s original location). The restaurant serves Sindangdong-style tteok-bokki, which combines red pepper paste and Chinese soybean paste to create a sweet and spicy fare. Another well-known specialty is dakbal (fried chicken feet seasoned with red pepper paste), which is especially popular among secondary school students. Tip: Order tteok-bokki to get a free soda.

Gimnyeong Maze Park

Gimnyeong Maze Park (김녕미로공원) is located between the two major tourist destinations of Manjanggul Cave and Gimnyeongsagul Cave. It was designed by the world famous company Adrian Fisher Minotaur Maze Designs and funded by the life-time savings of an American Professor at Cheju National University, Frederic H. Dustin, whose love for Jeju has kept him on the island for 27 years. This unique maze park contains foliages from all over Asia and has been personally maintained by Dr Dunstan since 1987.Gimnyeong Maze Park contains a maze that has seven images incorporated in it. The maze is in the shape of the Jeju Island, and its images that can be clearly seen from above include the following: a serpent, which was an object of worship on the island until the mid-70s; native horses of Jeju Island, which were brought there by Mongolians as far back as 1276; the ship, the Sparrowhawk, that was shipwrecked on the island in 1653 bringing Hendrick Hamel and his company of Dutch sailors to the Joseon Kingdom; and dolmens that are relics from the Bronze Age. All of these images are famous symbols or landmarks of Jeju Island.There are three skywalks called ‘gureum dari’ and an observatory, which are popular photo sites for tourists. They offer panoramic views of the entire maze. There are four ways to get through the maze from the entrance. If you use a map, it will take only 5 minutes, but without a map it’s a bit more difficult and can take up to 20 minutes. Some visitors have been known to spend up to 50 minutes lost in the maze before giving up and calling for help!

Lee Hyo-seok Culture Village

The Lee Hyo-Seok Culture Village is the place where the author Lee Hyo-Seok (penname “Gasan”) was born and raised. The village is also the setting of the author’s story "When the Buckwheat Blossoms,” one of the most celebrated Korean short stories to date. In 1990, the village place was designated ‘the first national cultural village,’ by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The village is comprised of the author's birth house, a water mill, Chungjujip, Gasan Park, Lee Hyo-Seok Memorial Hall, and the buckwheat museum. At the x_height of the blossoming season, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of snowy-white fields of buckwheat flowers and from late August to early September, the annual Lee Hyo-Seok Cultural Festival takes place. The Lee Hyo-Seok Cultural Festival commemorates the modern Korean writer and features buckwheat-themed programs. Events include a Hyo-seok essay contest, traditional performances, a costume parade, a photo contest, and "When the Buckwheat Blossoms" films and performances. During the festival, visitors can enjoy makguksu (buckwheat noodles) and buchim (buckwheat pancakes) and tour the locations that appear in the famous short story.
