Namdanghang Port, located at the west end of Hongseong, is a famous west coast port known for its exceptional seafood. Surrounded by the clean waters of Cheonsuman Bay, Namdahang Port is home to a wide array of sea life including blue crab, cockle and webfoot octopus. Namdanghang Port also draws throngs of visitors from early September to mid-October every year for the country’s largest Jumbo Shrimp Festival, which has been held since 1907.A major jumbo shrimp party unfolds along the west coast of Korea from October to November, and as the shrimp are in season, this is the ideal period to enjoy the savory food. The Jumbo Shrimp Festival offers not only food but also various activities for visitors to take part in such as catching clam in the mud flats or even personally catching jumbo shrimp. It also holds a diverse range of events such as traditional rites (rituals for a big catch of fish), fishing boat parades, singing contests as well as hands-on experience programs for catching and peeling jumbo shrimp. Regional products are also sold, making it possible to purchase quality jumbo shrimp at low prices. With much to offer, the festival draws over 700,000 visitors each year.

Silla:BaSilla
 
Gyeongsangbuk-do(Gyeongju-si) ,
Fifteen hundred years ago, there was a story about the Heroes of the Silk Road. Silla: Basilla was inspired by Kush-Nama, a Persian epic poem. It was then recompositioned centering around the characters in Kush-Nama, Prince Abtin and his son Fereydun, as well as the princess of Silla, Farārang. It takes place after the Sasanian Empire, the last pre-Islamic Persian empire, had ended. The story depicts the collision and harmonization of the three different cultures of Persia, Silla, and Arab. Dynamic storytelling is created through the characters and scenes. The spectacular stage sets, lighting, and video give the production incredible visual appeal. Also, specially designed props crossing the Silk Road and battle scenes of Zahhak and Fereydun allow the audience to feel as if they are part of a page in history.

Seongbuk Culture Diversity Festival

Held along Seongbukdong-gil Road, Seongbuk Multicultural Food Festival is held to commemorate the World Day for Cultural Diversity, and to foster opportunities for interaction among foreign community members through multiethnic foods. In addition, this festival tries to contribute to understanding and respecting the cultural diversity between ethnic groups, nations, and people by sharing and exhibiting traditional costumes, literature, and many artistic talents. The road will be closed during the designated days to be used as the festival venue.

Gimje Horizon Festival

Gimje Horizon Festival, held from late September to early October every year since 1999, takes place at Byeokgolje Reservoir, which is the heart of the Honam rice bowl. The festival aims to show the importance of Korea’s farming culture, which is a foundation of the nation, with the theme of sky and land meeting at the horizon. The festival also aims to promote the regional image and economy. Many dynamic and active programs are available for festival-goers to participate in before the golden horizon.Byeokgolje, the largest irrigation facility in the world, built 1,700 years ago during Baekje (King Biryu, 330), is embraced by the city of Gimje. Thanks to Byeokgolje, the area of Gimje is the birth place of Korea’s rice farming and agricultural culture. During the Baekje period, it was called ‘Byeokgolgun’ (a village of rice) which came from the fact that this area was the first area to start rice farming.During the festival, domestic and overseas visitors can take part in various hands-on programs feeling Korean farming culture in Byeokgolje (Historic Site No. 111). Visitors of all ages can easily take part in these programs to educate, inspire, and enjoy with a theme of spacious plains to the horizon. Events include kite-flying, rice-farming, catching grasshoppers, Korea Straw and Plants handicraft, making rice over an open fire, and other activities to entertain visitors.

Seowon Valley Green Concert

Wando Seaweeds Expo

Seaweed is a living organism that is symbolic of the clean water zone in the depths of the sea, and is also one of the origins of marine organisms. Wando Seaweeds Expo includes a range of displays of marine algae, discussions over environmental concerns such as climate change and global warming, and prospects for “green growth” through seaweed. The expo shows the importance of seaweed as a food resource, and aims to bolster the domestic seaweed industry. The expo also aims to make Korea a leading nation in the seaweed industry through an active response to the growing demand for Korean seaweed. A range of activities have been arranged for visitors to the festival, held in the Wando Port district, which include an exhibition, hands-on programs, an international forum, conference, and other events. It is the first expo to be centered on the theme of a variety of seaweed including dried and sea mustard. The seaweed expo will be a venue for the exchange of seaweed-related information and technology for participants representing 60 corporations in 20 countries around the world.
