Jeollanam-do(Mokpo-si)

The National Maritime Museum is the only domestic marine museum. Opened in 1994, it is a 2-story building with a B1 floor. There are 4 main exhibit halls and one special exhibit hall. At Exhibition 1, "Underwater Cultural Heritage from Wando," about 3,000 Goryeo ceramic relics excavated from just off the Eoduri sea, Wando district, and the Wooden ship of the Goryeo (918~1392) dynasty are exhibited. The Wando ship is a model of the original boat, half the size of the original ship. You can view the landscape around the old sea and learn about the world’s marine excavation history in this exhibition hall. At Exhibition 2, “Underwater Cultural Heritage from Sinan," you can view 22,000 pieces of 14th century Chinese ships, crockery and golden-ware. At Exhibition 3, "The Life of a Korean Fishing Village," you can learn about the traditional fishing techniques and tools, and you can view the living conditions of those times. It is interesting to compare the fishing methods of today to the past. And at Exhibition 4, "Korean Traditional Boats," you can see the development of Korean shipping and shipbuilding. There are many models displayed, from the ships of the Goryeo dynasty to the oilers of today. The rabbit and turtle shaped ships are quite eye-catching. When you have finished touring all the exhibit halls, take a stroll down the lounge to the souvenir shop to relax. On clear warm days, it is soothing to sit in the lounge under the warm sun. The sunshine coming through the window is brilliant. After a break, you can go outside to the outdoor exhibit, and enjoy seeing more traditional ships. Nexon Computer Museum is a computer museum run by Nexon, an online game developing company. Visitors can learn about the history of games and computers, and imagine the future while walking through the museum. The keyboard-shaped waffles sold at the cafe in the museum are also well-known.


Gangwon-do(Gangneung-si)

Charmsori Gramophone & Edison Science Museum founded by Son Seongmok is the largest gramophone museum in the world. It has a collection of 4,500 phonographs, 150,000 phonograph records, 1,000 books, and 5,000 items from 20 nations.1) World of Sound: The place for history of Sound. It displays gothic and renaissance organs, music boxes, radios and record players.2) World of Image: The place for silent films and biography films of masterminds and Edison. It displays Edison projectors and televisions, especially one made by Baird, John Logie (1888.8.13 ~ 1946.6.14) in 1925.3) World of Light: Displays items from Gas lamps to the original light bulb that Edison made, an electric generator of those days, the bamboo filament light bulb and the first wall-attached electric lamp. The wall-attached electric lamp is the part of the collection that was successfully accepted at Sotheby's auction in 1992.4) Edison Invention Hall: Displays 850 inventions of Edison's, including t three of his greatest inventions - phonographs, light bulbs and projectors. The Museum of Oriental Embroidery, opened January 11, 2011, exclusively displays the beautiful works crafted by women of the past. Over 500 pieces of Oriental embroidery from Korea, China and Japan are on display, and another 100 Western embroidery works are also displayed in a special exhibition hall. In this cultural space, one can discover the aesthetic world of Oriental embroidery.


Busan(Jung-gu)
