Hanbat Arboretum

Dunsan Grand Park, designated as an urban neighborhood park on June 7th, 1991, is a local cultural Mecca. The park is home to a wide variety of cultural and arts facilities including the Daejeon Culture & Arts Center, Pyeongsong Youth Cultural Center, Daejeon Museum of Art, and Ungno Lee Museum of Art. Coupled with the arboretum, it is one of the most culturally sophisticated areas of the city.The Hanbat Arboretum, linked with the Government Complex-Daejeon and Science Park, is the largest manmade urban arboretum. This venue serves multiple purposes: to act as a reservoir of genetically diverse foliage, an eco learning center for students, and a recreational area where people can relax and pass the time in the peaceful embrace of nature. The arboretum, standing on a lot measuring 387,000m2 (1,270,000ft) was developed as part of a three-stage plan. Seowon (West Garden, located north of the Daejeon Museum of Art) and Nammun Square opened on April 28th, 2005, while Dongwon (East Garden located north of Pyeongsong Youth Cultural Center), which consists of 19 uniquely themed parts such as the Magnolia Garden, Medicinal Herbs Garden, Rock Garden and Fruit Garden, opened on May 9th, 2009.

Songtan Special Tourist Zone

The Songtan Special Tourist Zone in Pyeongtaek is located near a US military base and consists of shopping malls and entertainment facilities. Yangjae Citizens' Park, located near Yangjae Tollgate, was created in anticipation of the Seoul Asian Games (1986) and the 24th Olympic Games (1988). The park provides a scenic habitat for 94,800 trees from 43 different species including pine, zelkova, purple bloom maple, horse chestnut, and nut pine. The leafy green woods, such as is rarely seen in cities, are a popular date spot for couples. In the fall, the trees in the park bear an abundance of persimmons and quinces.Amenities and facilities include an outdoor wedding venue, 4.8-km walking course, basketball court, volleyball court (also used for foot volleyball), tennis court, barefoot walking path, and outdoor workout equipment. Memorial sites and monuments like the memorial of Patriot Yun Bong-Gil can also be found scattered throughout the park grounds.

Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum is a hands-on experience museum run by the National Folk Museum of Korea. A variety of visual aids and assembly models allow children to touch and feel pieces and experience folk history in an interactive way. The theme of the exhibition consists of folk clothing, food, shelter, social life, and entertainment. The museum has a number of interactive spaces including a table set for an ancestral ritual, magnet miniatures depicting a baby’s first birthday, and an area where young visitors can build a folk house. Young learners can also create an avatar clad in Hanbok, make Kimchi using visual aids, or play Gonu (a traditional board game). The museum also collects, preserves, and maintains relics and historical items related to youth and youth culture.
