Mokpo Natural History Museum

The museum consists of a natural history building, local history building and has a total of three floors, two of which are above ground.

Muan White Lotus Festival

Muan is the largest habitat of the White Lotus flower in Asia, spanning 330,000m2 in size. While most lotus flowers are pink, the lotus flowers in Muan are snow white, which is very rare. During the Muan White Lotus Festival festival, visitors can enjoy a landscape filled with white lotus flowers and lotus-themed activities. Festival Guide: The festival starts with a celebration parade. Visitors can enjoy exhibits about lotus flowers and the history of lotus medicine, as well as a photo exhibit and hands-on programs. Activities include making handcrafts with the seeds of lotus flowers, natural dyeing using lotus flowers, making lotus soup, cooking lotus-wrapped rice and more. Different kinds of lotus can be observed at the natural learning garden of water plants, which is on the way to the venue. Salt Gallery (소금박물관)

The building for Salt Gallery is the original stone-built salt storage in 1945, which remained intact. Previously a wooden storage for salt, it was later used as a warehouse for materials, and it is now transformed into a Salt Gallery after remodeling in 2007. The gallery was thought to a source of important historical data for salt farms since it remains the old scene from the past. Also, it offers a modern stone-built storage at this exhibition hall. The gallery exhibits everything about salt, from stories to anthropological aspects. In particular, the exhibition tries to break down the misunderstanding in which salt is thought to be the principal factor of diabetes and high blood pressure, and acknowledge the useful health benefits of salt by explaining the different types of salt uses. Beyond the general information on salt, the history behind salt is also explained. Gurye 5-Day Market & Gurye Traditional Market

Gurye is the first famous national park in Jirisan Mountain and is home to clean water and spacious fields near Seomjingang River. The main products of this area include a variety of wild herbs, vegetables, sansuyu (cornus fruit) and plums from Jirisan Mountain and Baegunsan Mountain. Houses with cornus fruit trees are easily found in the district of Sandong-myeon, Gurye-gun and the whole village gets dyed yellow in the spring and red in the fall. The amount of sansuyu from the area accounts for nearly half Korea’s total. Also, chestnuts are common in Gurye Market as a complex of chestnut tree takes up 1,400 ㏊ of the land.
