New Year Festival, Seol

"New Year Festival, Seol" is an event held by the National Folk Museum of Korea. Kick start this year by joining New Year Festival Seol. In celebrating the year of the monkey, the museum will present varied programs that are themed with monkeys as well as offering traditional folk experiences, Seollal cultural programs and a special exhibition. Over 30 programs will run for 5 days, offering plenty of opportunities to learn about Seollal customs and get a deeper understanding on the meaning of Seollal. Admission to the museum is free of charge and no reservation is required for most of the activites. Seollal traditions include fortune telling and wishing for good luck in the New Year. Hoeryongpo Village (회룡포) is surrounded by the winding Naeseongcheon River, a tributary of the Nakdonggang River. The village offers views of a beautiful landscape created by the twists and curves of the river, while the best views of the scenic nature are at Jangansa Temple or Hoeryongdae Hill on Mt. Biryongsan. This village is jar-shaped, surrounded by the river, its pristine waters and white sandy shores. The white sands give way to trees, and there is a well-developed farm further inland. There were almost 20 households in this village about 7-8 years ago, but now, only 9 households remain. It takes less than an hour to tour the entire village. The village is famous for ecological hands-on programs (a filming location of the mega-hit TV drama ‘Autumn in My Heart (2002)’).

Fossil Dinosaur and Bird Footprints of Goseong

The ancient fossil site at Deokmyeong-ri, Goseong-gun, is one of the largest Cretaceous dinosaur fossils sites in the world. It is the home of a vast amount of footprints from a variety of ancient species, as well as the largest Mesozoic bird footprint found to date. The formations from many different prehistoric eras make it a precious site for academic research on the life patterns of dinosaurs, the ancient natural environment and formations, the distribution of sea and land, and the evolution of bird species. It is also a great tourist attraction that offers magnificent scenery, including a coastline dotted with beautiful Hallyeosudo islets, unique rock formations and cliffs, and sea caves.

Haemi Eupseong Traditional Cultural Performance

Haemi Eupseong Traditional Cultural Performance is held every year at Haemi Eupseong, a representative fortress of the Joseon Dynasty, which was selected as one of the "100 tourist spots the Korean people must go" in 2015 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. One of Korea's best performances, this event presents a variety of spectacles to domestic and foreign tourists. The event consists of a series of Korean traditional performances which might be unfamiliar but certainly interesting to the contemporary people. The historical importance of the fortress adds value and meaning to the event.

Daeijakdo Island (대이작도)

Daeijakdo Island is 44km away from Incheon, and 200m east of Soijakdo Island. Although it is a small island, it has beautiful scenic views, clear water, white sandy beaches, and a dense Haesong Forest (black pine forest). There are 4 beaches on the Daeijakdo Island: Keunpulan, Jageunpulan, Mokjanggol, Ddeneomeo (Gyenam). All are covered with fine sands, and have a gentle slope. Apart from swimming in the calm waters of Daeijakdo Island, visitors can also enjoy digging for clams.
