Jeollabuk-do(Wanju-gun)

Situated in the foothills of Juchulsan Mountain, Wibongsanseong Fortress was constructed over a period of 7 years starting in 1675. The fortress was built as a safe place to keep the portrait of King Taejo, which had been kept at Gyeonggijeon in Jeonju until the Donghak Peasant Revolution broke out and put the portrait in jeopardy. Originally, the Wibongsanseong Fortress measured 16 kilometers long, 4 to 5 meters high, and 3 meters wide with three gates and eight emergency gates. Today, only a section of the fortress wall and the west gate remain. Wibongsa Temple is located past Mujigaemun Gate (Rainbow Gate) and Wibong Village and is a major temple in the Honam region that once oversaw 52 branch temples. Said to be built by Monk Seoam in 604 (the 5th year of King Mu of Baekje), the surviving buildings date back to the Joseon Era. Today, only Bogwangmyeongjeon Hall (Treasure No. 608), Yosa (Provincial Cultural Asset No. 698), and Samseonggak remain. The Baeguigwaneumbosal wall painting in particular is the pride of the temple.

Jeollabuk-do(Sunchang-gun)

With an elevation of 583.7 m, Gangcheonsan County Park (강천산군립공원) in Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, has towering peaks all around and waterfalls that cascade between the surrounding rocks. Its deep valleys covered with thick forests have kept their natural beauty for centuries. There are also many cultural properties including the historic Gangcheonsa Temple, Samindae, Gangcheonsan Five-story Stone Pagoda and Geumseongsanseong Fortress. In the valley at the entrance of Gangcheonsa there is a stream of clear water flowing below from Doseongyo to Byeongpungbawi (wall-like precipitous rocks) with more than ten waterfalls each with a small pond below. If you pass between Gangcheonsa, an old temple, and Samindae, and continue walking on the path next to Heunghwajeong, you will see a 75 meter long hanging bridge at 50 meters high above the ground. To see it you have to strain your neck backwards to look up at it. After going up a steep hill and crossing the hanging bridge, you will get to a vista point where you can enjoy a wide view of the lovely Mt. Gangcheonsan. At an elevation of 300 meters, the mountain has a reservoir and a natural mountain fortress wall climbing 400 meters high. The type of maple trees found here are native to Korea, and have a long foliage period in autumn.

Jeollabuk-do(Gochang-gun)

The Borinara Hagwon Farm is a large-scale barley farm that measures an extensive 561,983m² (1,843,780 ft). It is the nation’s largest barley field, which requires a full week to harvest the crop. The field is now hosting a green barley festival to celebrate the burgeoning beauty of the season. The festival is the perfect spring getaway where you may enjoy walking through the rolling green hills of the country’s most extensive barley field. A diverse range of family friendly, hands-on events are available to visitors who wish to truly capture the country experience. Once the barley harvest is completed, the buckwheat harvest begins. From late summer to early autumn, the field is filled with snow-white buckwheat flowers that create a seemingly endless, breathtaking view. The buckwheat flower festival takes place around September. Between the barely harvest and the buckwheat seeding, sunflowers color the field a bright sunshine yellow. Any time from spring through autumn, you may enjoy the ever-changing beauty of nature.

Jeollabuk-do(Jangsu-gun)

Situated in Jangsu-gun in Jeollabuk-do Province, Jangansan Mountain (alt. 1,237m) was officially designated a county park in 1986. Deoksan Valley Stream, which originates in the southwestern part of Jangansan Mountain and flows into Yongnimcheon Stream, is famous for the Deoksanyongso Waterfall Basins and the 20 or so large rocks that dot its banks. The sprawling fields of reeds along the East Ridge are also a major draw, undulating like waves of gold in the crisp autumn wind. Nearby attractions include the birthplace and shrine of Nongae and the Banghwadong Family Vacation Village, which offers minbaks (lodgings in private residences), an auto camping site, water recreation facilities, and a campfire area.

Jeollabuk-do(Jinan-gun)

Uniram Baniram Valley (5km long) falls between Myeongdeokbong Peak and Myeongdobong Peak in the northeastern region of Mount Unjangsan. The name Uniram refers to the steep walls of the valley where nothing but the sky, rocks, thick forests, and clouds can be seen. The valley is also befittingly named Baniram since it is so deep that it only receives direct sunlight for half the day. There are many strangely-shaped rocks like Jjokduri Rock, Cheollyeop Rock, and Daebul Rock scattered throughout the lush valley. At the peak of summer, the area is crowded with vacationers and is also popular for its autumn leaves.

Jeollabuk-do(Gimje-si)

The largest irrigation facility in Korea, Byeokgolje Reservoir (Historic Site No. 111) is considered the birthplace of Korea’s rice-farming culture. All that remains of the reservoir today are a three-kilometer long embankment that spans from Sinyong-ri to Wolseung-ri in Buryang-myeon, Gimje-si and a monument that was erected in 1415. The Byeokgolje Museum of Agricultural Culture exhibits around 250 artifacts related to rice farming; located within the same complex is an experience center where visitors can discover the many properties of irrigation facilities first-hand.
