Gunsan Modern History Museum Time Travel sets the stage for experience activities that not only Gunsan citizens but also tourists can enjoy together, showing different aspects of Gunsan. In particular, it is significant in that citizens, not professional actors, prepare and stage their performance. In other words, the event places emphasis on holding a real “open performance,” pursuing participation-oriented performance different from other ordinary shows. In addition, outdoor performance and a modern puppet show that tell about the history and culture of Gunsan let tourists know the attractiveness of Gunsan where independence movements had been actively carried out since the March 1st Movement in 1919.

- The outdoor performance which takes place in Museum Gaehangjangteo tells a story about hardship and ordeal of Gunsan people during the Japanese colonial era.

[Modern puppet show Bike Chae Geum-seok, the Giant in Soccer]
- The puppet show held in Gyujanggak in the museum tells a story about the life of Chae Geum-seok, a national soccer player active during the Japanese colonialism.

[Traditional play activities]
- Visitors accompanied by children can enjoy various traditional plays such as jegi kicking, yutnori (traditional board game), and tuho (arrow throwing) with them.

- Cultural artists from Gunsan participate in this flea market, and the place of the market is also used for performing the outdoor performance “Sutaljeon.”

- Various performances of samulnori, folk songs, and busking are held.
Admission: Museum admission (Adult: 2,000 won) is charged in the event of watching a modern puppet show. Modern drama and traditional play activities are free of charge.

Gunsan Modern History Museum Time Travel provides various spectacles and activities against a backdrop of the historical places of Gunsan in the modern era, so visitors can feel as if they were in the middle of the events that they learned about in the history textbook. The outdoor performance titled “Sutaljeon” tells about hardship and resistance of our ancestors who suffered from forced exploitation during the Japanese colonial era, and the modern puppet show “Bike Chae Geum-seok, the Giant in Soccer” tells about the entire life of Chae Geum-seok, Korea’s boastful sportsman. Visitors can widen their knowledge about important historical facts, do the shopping at a flea market “Museum Gaehangjangteo” and enjoy “Cultural Street Performance” in an atmosphere of freedom.

Synopsis

Various performances such as a parade, a drama, and a puppet show deal with the history of our ancestors’ ordeal and resistance that occurs in Gunsan during the Japanese colonialism. The outdoor performance “Sutaljeon” is a modern drama set in Gunsan during the Japanese colonial era, and citizens, not professional performers, can participate in the drama, so the voluntary organization composed of citizens play a role in planning and staging the performance. The modern puppet show “Bike Chae Geum-seok, the Giant in Soccer” is about the story of Chae Geum-seok, a national soccer player and Gunsan’s boastful athlete in the 1930s. The word “bike” from the title was derived from the player’s nickname “Bike of Gunsan,” and the show is performed inside of the museum, unlike other outdoor programs. Also, both adults and children can enjoy various traditional plays like jegi kicking, yutnori, and tuho together in the square in front of the museum. All participants in “Gunsan Modern History Museum Time Travel” can make a happy memory and have a sense of patriotism.
