Munmyo is a shrine dedicated to Confucius, whose teachings form the foundation of Confucianism. It is also dedicated to his disciples and other great Confucian scholars. Munmyo is not only the shrine but also the highest educational institution of the Joseon Dynasty. Munmyo was once called as Munseonwangmyo since during the Tang Dynasty, Confucius was named as King Munseon after his death and then it has been called as Munmyo since the Yuan Dynasty.The compound consists of two main areas: the Daeseongjeon houses shrines and the Myeongryundang features seminar halls and other auxiliary facilities. Also, there are two dormitories, Dongjae and Seojae, which are collectively known as Sungkyunkwan. In front of the Myeongryundang stands a ginkgo tree designated as Natural Monument No. 59. In spring and autumn, a ritual for Confucius and his disciples takes place.

Marronnier Park

Marronnier Park has at its center a symbolic marronnier (horse chestnut) tree, and all kinds of outdoor cultural event centers, sculpture exhibitions, and art centers are congregated in the area. The area began to develop in 1975 when Seoul National University was relocated away from here, and some 50 small theaters and 500 cafes concentrated in the area making this place a greatly beloved meeting and relaxation place for young and old alike. The park gets especially busy on the weekends when crowds gather to share cultural events. Bands and singers, as well as dance groups and comedians gather here and give on-the-spot performances. Fortunetellers and street artists also sit here and tell your fortunes or draw portraits of you. The park has many trees and benches to sit and relax on, making it an ideal place for relaxation and leisurely walks.Marronnier Park is a part of Daehangno, the famous street known as the ‘mecca of plays’. Jeongdongjin Sunrise Park

Located in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, Jeongdongjin is a picturesque area with a quaint, little railway station standing alongside the sandy beach. Although long since a favorite spot among the locals, the area gained widespread popularity after being chosen as the filming location for the popular soap opera Moraeshigae (Hourglass) and has since become a favorite haunt for drama lovers on the weekends.The combination of the area’s railroad station, beach, and groves of pine trees, makes Jeongdongjin a very peaceful and romantic mini getaway. The highlight of the Jeongdongjin tour, however, is the sunrise. The early morning sun reaching out over the ocean and outlining the dewy silhouettes of the station and surrounding pines is a sight that is straight out of a fairy tale. During the New Year, Jeongdongjin Sunrise Park is the location of the Sunrise Festival and the ceremonial ‘turning of the hourglass,’ signifying the changing year.

Seoul National Cemetery

The rear area of the Seoul National Cemetery is surrounded by the sacred mountain ridges of the Dong Jak region that connect to Mt. Gongjak and form the foothills of Mt. Gwanak. Towards the front, the cemetery overlooks the meandering Han River.The Seoul National Cemetery is situated on a plot of land measuring approximately 1,430,000㎡. Entombed here are the remains of 165,000 martyrs and soldiers, police men, and reserve forces who sacrificed themselves for their country. Enshrined within the Memorial Tower are memorial tablets of some 104,000 soldiers who died during the Korean War, but whose bodies were never found along with the remains of some 7,000 unknown soldiers whose bodies were found. The remains of more than 54,000 martyred patriots have been buried in the Burial Plots, which are divided into various sections: graves of soldiers, police officers, meritorious citizens, and key figures of the provisional government. Every year on June 6th (Memorial Day) memorial services and events are held at the Seoul National Cemetery to honor these brave patriots.Facilities consist of the Memorial Gate, Memorial Tower, Chungseong Fountain Tower, Holy Ground, Photographic Exhibition House, Educational Movie Theater, and Relics Exhibition House. In 1955, the cemetery was established as the National Military Cemetery and then was elevated to the status of National Cemetery ten years later in 1965. In 1996, the managing institution also underwent a name change from "National Cemetery Management Office" to "National Memorial Board."
