Gangwon-do(Sokcho-si)

You can see Sokcho Beach (450m long, 45-80m wide, average depth 1m) after about a 500m walk from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. The view of its clear water, white sand and the pine forest is beautiful, and the nearby bus terminal makes transportation very convenient. It is also close to Seorak Mountain, and many hikers come by here as they go through Daecheongbong to Seorak-dong from the inner Seorak area. The white sand beach is 2km long, extending through Cheongho-dong, Joyang-dong, and Daepo-dong. The area open to the public is 0.45 km long and 75m wide, making it about 9,000 pyeong. More and more visitors are flocking to the area because of the superb quality of the sand.Sokcho beach plays an important role in displaying Sokcho-si as a great tourist area along with Seorak Mountain, Cheoksan Hot Springs, Cheongchoho, and Yeongrangho etc. On the bulwark, to the left of the beach, there are many places where you can enjoy hwaleo hoe (fresh sashimi). You can also enjoy sea fishing by taking a boat to Jo Island in the open-sea area by the beach.


Gangwon-do(Chuncheon-si)

Opened in August 2006, the Chuncheon Makguksu Museum is all about makguksu, one of the representative local dishes of Chuncheon. Makguksu is buckwheat noodle served in cold kimchi broth. The museum includes a buckwheat exhibition hall and a makguksu experience hall.The buckwheat exhibition hall has display materials and information on the origin and distribution of buckwheat, its history, and related foods. Visitors can get a glimpse of the variety of makguksu noodle throughout its development over time.

The main theme of Wonju Hanji Festival is “Hanji - embracing our wisdom and beauty as a wonderful cultural heritage” and the festival offers varied programs related to hanji, such as the history and making process, various uses, hanji arts and more. An exhibition of hanji art by international artists is on display. In addition, various hands-on programs such as making hanji, hanji handcrafts, playing activity with hanji, and night performances are prepared to entertain and educate visitors at the festival.

Interesting Facts about the Sheep Farm: Established in 1988, the Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm raises sheep on an area of 195 k㎡, and is privately owned. There are many small to large animal farms in Pyeongchang, but the Sheep Farm is the only farm that raises sheep.The farm features more than 200 sheep. The first thing that comes into view as you approach the farm are the herds of white sheep roaming on the green plains. The sheep grazing season varies depending on the weather, but it usually begins in early May and lasts until the end of October. During this season the sheep are allowed to graze 24 hours. In April, before the grazing season begins, the sheep are all shaved. However, it’s difficult to touch the sheep, because they are instinctively afraid of people and avoid close contact. If you want to get closer to the sheep, go on the ‘Sheep Hay Feeding Tour’ for 3,500 won if you are an adult and 3,000 won if you are a student.The walkway of 1.2m surrounds the sheep’s grazing field, so visitors can view the sheep at all times during their visit. It takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to walk along this path. You may also wish to drive, however walking is recommended. At the entrance of the walkway stands a wooden shack for the backdrop of the movie ‘The Man from Mars.’ The shack served as a backdrop along with a white snowy field where the two main characters finally fell in love in the movie. The wooden shack fits perfectly with the sheep farm, so it was kept after the filming of the movie. Past the shack uphill is the 950m peak of the sheep farm. The cool breeze, the wide green hill, and the blue sky with the roaming sheep offer the most peaceful experience. The path down from the hill is lined with oak trees and 30 types of wild flowers. This area is also famous for its groundsels, a type of wild vegetable. If you want to enjoy the sheep farm in a more romantic way, walk along the path during sunset. The blazing red skies and cool sea breeze will give the most natural romantic setting.The Sheep Farm is open all year round, and the most ideal time to visit is between June and August during the grazing season. You can see the sheep herds and various wild plants during this time. The Sheep Farm offers accommodations, toilets, and benches. If you decide to stay a night, you can try the outdoor lamb chops, or the sagolgomtang.

Woljeongsa Temple is located in the forest of the valley east of Mt. Odaesan, and it is composed of 60 temples and 8 monasteries made into one large temple. Woljeongsa Temple was established by Monk Ja Jang (590~658). At Woljeongsa Temple there is the Seongbo Museum where you can view the Buddhist culture of the Goryeo Dynasty (918∼1392), the nine-story octagonal pagoda, also called as the Sari-Pagoda (relic pagoda), and the Stone Seated Buddha figure. Also there is the Jeokmyeolbogung where Buddha's bones are said to be preserved, and the large sermon hall Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion. Usually in a Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion the Vairocana figure is enshrined, but it is interesting that the Sakyamuni figure is enshrined at Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion at Woljeong temple. Woljeongsa Temple of today was restored after the Korean war in 1950 when the Chilbulbojeon, Yeongsanjeon, Gwaneungjeon, Jinyeonggak and 17 other buildings were burned. Many cultural assets and historic data were lost at this time. The Silla Dongjong, which was excavated from the Seonrimwon site in Yangyang-gun, was also lost. The Budo site (relic site) and sagoji (historic document storage) is nearby Woljeongsa Temple. The Budo site is a 15-minute walk from the Woljeongsa Temple to its location at the Sangwonsa Temple, just before crossing the Banya Bridge. Here there are 22 pagodas that hold the remains of the monks who had lived here. Sagoji is an hour’s walk from Woljeongsa Temple towards Sangwonsa near Yeonggamsa Temple.

The Daegwallyeong Snow Festival is held in the Hoenggye-ri area, which is located in Daegwanryeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do. Having recently changed its name to Tourist & Fishery Market (formerly Jungang Market), this market was opened in 1982, and is comprised of around 450 stores throughout 1 basement level and 2 above-ground levels. It covers a total floor area of 15,436 ㎡. Fishery items and hoetjip (raw fish restaurants) are located on the basement level, and general whole sales and retail sales, such as food and clothes, are available on the first and second floors. In addition, many of Sokcho's famous snacks like dak-gangjeong (sweet and sour chicken) are found at many of the stalls inside the market.


Gangwon-do(Chuncheon-si)

Take a look down Chuncheon’s most famous side street and you will find out what the area’s most popular food is. The name of the food is dakgalbi, spicy stir-fried chicken with vegetables. The other famous food of this region is makguksu, cold buckwheat noodles. This side street is Chuncheon’s most famous shopping street. Locals refer to this street as the Myeong-dong of Chuncheon.*(Myeong-dong is a famous shopping district in the capital city of Seoul.)Dakgalbi is prepared by marinating chopped chicken in spicy red pepper paste with peppery seasoning for about one day. Cabbage, green onions, sweet potatoes, and cylinder shaped rice cakes are then added and the ingredients are all placed in a large cast iron pan. The mixture is then typically stir-fried at the table. These days many people prefer the boneless option. Dakgalbi can be enjoyed on its own or wrapped in lettuce leaves for a fresh, crunchy taste. After most of the Dakgalbi has been eaten, rice is then stir-fried with the remaining sauce in the pan. This dish is ordered according to the number of people eating. Large quantities are usually given, so if you go with three people it is recommended to order Dakgalbi for two.For years, the Chuncheon region has been well known for its abundant poultry farms. The famous shopping street in Chuncheon started out with only 2~3 dakgalbi restaurants. Now there are currently around 25.Due to the close proximity of the restaurants, the prices are almost identical.
